i'm sarah johns. i'm noah bond. the republican caucuses are just getting underway in many areas of nevada. including right here in washoe county, where caucus sites are just opening. lines are already beginning to form at reed high school in sparks. where senator ted cruz is expected to make an appearnce in the next few minutes. kolo 8 news now's paul harris is there live, kicking off our caucus coverage. this afternoon he was at the nugget where donald trump rallied supporters. paul? more than four thousand people turned up at the nugget this afternoon to hear trump speak... and he did not disappoint. nats of walking in donald trump walked into a room to nats of walking in

"if every one of you brings nine other people tonight, i am telling you right now, the men and women standing and sitting on this lawn can control the outcome of the nevada caucuses," kolo 8 news now's colin lygren was at cruz's rally in minden. he'll take a closer look, at what the senator had to say to supporters. that's coming up at 5-30. ### there are a few things you need to remember if you plan on taking part in tonight's republican caucus. first... your caucus site may or may not be the same as your regular voting location. second... you'll need to check the time your precint is caucusing. you can only participate if you are already registered to vote as a republican. the deadline to register for tomorrow's caucus has already passed. you have a couple of options. you can fill out a ballot with your candidate preference... or stay

various candidates. but before you can participate... you'll need to have a government- issued i-d when you check in. you can find more information about the the caucuses on kolo- tv-dot-com. just click on hot topics. bernie sanders is hoping the most recent endorsement, will help him with black voters. today, movie director spike lee released an ad-- supporting sanders in south carolina. in the 60-second spot-- lee says "when bernie gets into the white house, he will do the right thing." sanders is looking to increase his support among black voters. a recent c-n-n-o-r-c south carolina poll, showed hillary clinton with 65-percent support from black voters, in the ad-- lee also pushes for voters to support sanders instead of quote-- "corporate puppets." south carolina democrats, hold their primary on saturday. ### you can get the most up-to-date election information anytime, with the kolo 8 news now mobile app. you can download it free, for apple or android, from your phone's app store.###

items. gonzalez was later identified by hotel security. the other suspect was last seen wearing a black zip-up and jeans. gonzalez faces several charges including possession of stolen property and reckless driving.### new details are emerging about the suspect, in that deadly shooting in michigan. he's now charged with killing 6 people, and injuring 2 others. investigators say jason dalton admitted to his rampage, and now we are learning what he may have done-- just hours before the shooting. elizabeth hur reports. and facing life in prison.. judge: "do you understand the charges? dalton: yes sir." dalton showed no emotion.. dalton: "i would prefer just to remain silent." and revealed no new details during his arraigment.. but prosecutors say.. the 45-year-old admitted to people's lives".. dalton's friends say

best man skype feed andrew jamieson/best man at dalton's wedding: "he was very quiet and reserved. definitely not out to ever cause anybody trouble." according to the detroit free press.. dalton once worked as an insurance adjustor?is married and the father of a 10 and 15 year old.. gun shop owner "friendly, talked to us, smiling joking around." this gun shop owner.. also in shock.. sharing these surveillance pictures of dalton in his store.. just hours before the shooting.. buying a tactical jacket. jonathan southwick, southwick's gun and ammo shop "seemed like he was having a good time, as opposed to someone that went on a shooting rampage, totally different people." uber witness kacey black, kalamazoo township; "screeching like you would not believe." kacey black says she called 911 to report dalton's erratic driving that saturday afternoon.. uber confirms getting reports about dalton during the attacks but maintains those were the first complaints about him. dalton stands accused of shooting 8 people at 3 separate locations.. killing 6 and injuring 2.. including a 14-year-old girl in critical condition.. initially believed to be brain- dead. abigail mother: "abigail is strong. everybody needs to get

dead." authorities say dalton is cooperating.. but still not talking about a possible motive. he's due back in court next thursday. new york. a 38-year-old ohio man has pleaded guilty to fraud for illegally unemployment benefits nevada while in jail. michael whitlock committed the theft in 2010 and 2011. as part of his plea, whitlock will pay back more than 13-thousand dollars to the state's unemployment department. he will be sentenced in june.### oklahoma senators are concerned with the quality of care, given at veterans affairs hospitals-- around the country, but especially in oklahoma. kolo 8 news now's washington correspondent peter zampa talked with senator james lank-ford about legislation designed to bring more accountability to the v- a. the legislation introduced by senators lankford and inhofe

leadership the ability to fire anyone not giving quality care at va the senators say it directors at local va hospitals currently appropriately address staff concerns. they say this legislation will give directors the tools they need to run quality vets. senator lankford says for years he has been pushing for investigations into poor health care at va's across oklahoma. but, they want to avoid the need for investigations, which they say starts with leadership that can ensure better care. sen. james lankford: "there are some bad apples in it. for those individuals that need to be removed from those va centers, it is a long bureaucratic fight to actually go through that. that is a discouragement to the good employees that are actually there. to have to work with people that are not pulling their own weight." senator lankford says as of now there's no opposition to the bill. some have said they just

sports program at the university of tennessee are joining forces to defend against-- what they view, as an unfair attack on their school's reputation. the university's coaches are organizing a rare joint news conference.... two weeks after a sexual assault lawsuit against the school gained national attention--- because of a link to star quarterback peyton manning. bazi kanani reports. a united front at the university of tennessee. beth alford-sullivan, track & field head coach: "couldn't be more proud of the culture here that is connected and bonded."

forward together to defend their school's reputation... against allegations of sexual abuse made in a lawsuit sweeping national headlines. holly warlick: "to think the university is not treating women fairly is not true." at least six women disagree. they're suing the university-- claiming it created a hostile enviroment for women... protecting male athletes... by acting with "deliberate indifference in its response to incidents of sexual assault." the suit focuses on five recent cases... ryan smith / legal analyst, abc news: but one paragraph in the 64-page complaint refers to a 20-year-old allegation against superbowl champion quarterback, peyton manning. back in 1996, a female trainer at the school accused manning of sexually assaulting her

vehemently denies. he did reach a financial settlement with his accuser. christine brennan: "it involves one of the great heroes of our culture in sports. it's a story that is potentially incredibly damaging to peyton manning." the university's coaches... are concerned about the potential damage to their current athletes from the lawsuit. butch jones: "i think it's unfair that a lot of these individuals that don't go to parties, that have never had a drop of alcohol... the action of one reflect on all." head football coach butch jones calls his players "good kids" who shouldn't be stereotyped. he denies accusations of a culture problem in his program... but acknowledges efforts to get better. jones: "our hearts our prayers our feelings go out to the alleged victims. i know we all feel for them. that's why we are constantly trying to prevent it." bazi kanani abc news washington. i-phone security is at stake. the f-b-i is asking apple to reveal locked information. the new backlash... stirring across the nation. and the possible next step in this showdown. plus-- "this is about closing a chapter in our history." the president's fight to close guantanamo bay is getting a big response, in northern nevada. presidential candidates are firing back. for news while you're on the go, listen to our newscast partner,

guantanamo bay does not advance our national security. it undermines it." president obama is calling for the closure of guantanamo bay. the plan comes seven years after obama made an oval office vow, to permanently shutter the prison. the president says not only does the prison undermine national security... the closure will also save money. but, the announcement was blasted by republican candidate ted cruz, at a campaign event in fernley today.
